How to back up photos from your phone to your computer
Your phone is the only place most of your recent life lives — thousands of pictures and videos, one cracked screen or lost handset away from gone. Backing them up to a computer you own is the single most reliable safety net there is. Here are the ways that actually work on iPhone and Android, and what to do about the messy folder you inevitably end up with afterward.
iPhone: three reliable ways
Any of these gets your photos onto a computer you control. Pick the one that matches the computer you have:
- USB into a Mac. Plug the phone in with its cable, unlock it, and tap Trust when asked. Open the Photos app, choose your iPhone in the sidebar, and use Import All New Items (or select what you want). This pulls the full-resolution originals, videos included.
- USB into Windows. Plug in, unlock, tap Trust. Open the
Photos app and use its Import button, or open
File Explorer, find the phone under This PC, and copy the
DCIMfolders straight off it like any drive. - Download from iCloud. If your library lives in iCloud Photos, sign in at
iCloud.comor use iCloud for Windows and download the originals to a folder. For a full copy, privacy.apple.com lets you request an export of everything.
A note on HEIC. Newer iPhones save photos as
.HEIC rather than .JPG to fit more in less space. It's a normal,
high-quality format — the originals are worth keeping — but some older programs won't open it.
Copy the real HEIC files rather than letting a tool silently convert everything to JPEG, and
keep a viewer that reads HEIC.
Android: USB or Google
Android makes the direct copy especially easy, because the phone shows up as a drive:
- USB file transfer. Plug the phone into the computer, then pull down the
notification and choose File transfer / MTP (by default the cable only
charges). The phone now appears in File Explorer on Windows, or in
Android File Transfer on a Mac. Open it and copy the
DCIMfolder — that is where the camera saves everything — plusPicturesfor screenshots and saved images. - Google Photos. If your pictures back up to Google Photos, you can download them to a computer, or use Google Takeout to export the whole library at once. Takeout hands you a set of zip files rather than a tidy folder, so there's an unpacking step waiting on the other side.
The part nobody warns you about
Whichever route you take, you end up with the same thing: a big folder full of files named
IMG_1234.JPG, IMG_1235.JPG, VID_2088.MP4 — no order, no
albums, just a wall of near-identical names. That's a phone dump, and one on its own is
already hard to browse.
The real trouble is that you rarely have just one. Most people have imported from their phone several times over the years — a dump from the old handset, another from the current one, an iCloud or Takeout export somewhere, maybe a copy your partner made "just in case." Each of those overlaps heavily with the others: the same holiday, the same birthday, the same thousand photos, repeated across folders. Pile them together and your library balloons to several times its true size, and finding one specific picture becomes hopeless.
Backing up is step one, not the whole job. Getting the files safely onto your computer protects them. Turning those overlapping dumps into one clean, dated, browsable library is a separate task — and it's the one that decides whether you ever actually look at these photos again.
Copy safely, then organize
A couple of habits make the backup itself dependable. Always copy, never move
— leave the originals on the phone until you've confirmed the copy opens on the computer. Copy the
real files, not screenshots of them, and resist any "helper" that re-compresses on the way in.
Grab the videos too: .MP4 and .MOV clips live right alongside the stills
in the same folders, and they're the files most likely to be skipped and lost. Once the pictures
are safely on a drive you own, you can take your time sorting them out.
It also pays to give the fresh dump its own dated folder rather than merging it straight into
last year's — something like Phone import 2026-09. That keeps each backup traceable,
and it means the organizing step later can see every import separately and work out what overlaps
with what, instead of you trying to eyeball thousands of near-identical filenames by hand.
