Tens of thousands of photos. A dozen backups.
One de-duplicated archive.

PictureAttic gathers every photo and video you own — phone dumps, camera cards, old drives, Google Takeout and iCloud exports — finds and removes the duplicates (even copies a service re-compressed to different sizes), and files each one by the camera that took it and the date it was taken. All on your own computer.

Who it's for

Made for anyone with photos in too many places

For families

Bring every photo home

Baby pictures on an old phone, holidays on a camera card, a parent's shoebox of scans. PictureAttic gathers them into one archive on your own computer — filed by year and by the camera that took them, readable without any app or account, safe to hand down. No cloud, no subscription.

For people drowning in duplicates

Finally kill the copies

The same trip backed up to three drives. A Google Takeout that overlaps your iCloud export. Ten copies of the same photo at slightly different sizes. PictureAttic keeps one clean copy of each, removes the rest — and gives you a report proving nothing unique was lost, so you can reclaim the space with confidence.

The process

How it works

1

Point it at everything

Folders, whole drives, phone dumps, Google Takeout and iCloud zips — PictureAttic scans them all, unpacking archives as it goes. Your originals are opened read-only and never touched.

2

It removes duplicates and files by camera & date

Every unique photo is kept once — even when a service re-compressed the same shot to a different size, PictureAttic recognizes it from its metadata and skips the copy. Each keeper is filed by the camera that took it and the real date it was taken (read from the photo's EXIF, not the file date), so a 2009 picture lands under 2009 even if you copied it last week. Prefer year-first, or no camera folders at all? You choose the layout.

3

You get an organized archive you can add to

Clean, dated folders of ordinary image files — nothing proprietary — plus a report of exactly what came from where. Find more photos later? Point PictureAttic at the same archive again and it adds only what's new. A huge library is even safe to stop or resume: progress is saved as it goes, and Cancel stops a run any time.

Why it exists

Built by someone who needed it

472,982 photos and videos.

PictureAttic grew out of the same rescue mission as EmailAttic: one family's pictures — nearly half a million of them, four terabytes, spanning 1980 to today — scattered across phones, cameras, drives and cloud exports, the same shots duplicated over and over and none of them dated correctly once they'd been copied around. Ordinary duplicate-finders matched only byte-identical files and missed the re-compressed copies; nothing put the photos back in the right year.

PictureAttic is the tool that fixed it — content and metadata de-duplication so re-encoded copies are caught too, and true capture-date filing — rebuilt so anyone can do it in an afternoon.

Questions people actually ask

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. PictureAttic is a desktop app. Your photos never leave your computer — there's no account, no cloud, and we couldn't see them if we wanted to.

Does it find similar or “looks-alike” photos?

No — and that's on purpose. PictureAttic removes true duplicates only: files that are byte-for-byte identical, plus the exact same photo re-saved to different bytes (recognized from its identical camera metadata — an iCloud or Google Photos re-compression, say). It does not guess that two different shots “look alike,” thin out burst frames, or match edited versions — so it never deletes a picture that isn't genuinely another copy of the very same one.

Will the dates be right?

PictureAttic reads each photo's real capture date from its EXIF metadata, so pictures land in the year they were taken even after being copied or exported. When there's no capture date, it uses the earliest file date and flags the rest as “undated.”

Subscription?

No. Pay once, own it — updates to the version you buy are free. If a big new version ever ships, upgrading is optional and discounted for owners, and your copy keeps working either way.
